Step Four Workbook

“Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”

Step four is often looked upon as one of the more painful steps. It requires a high degree of honesty with ourselves and a fair amount of introspection.A searching and fearless moral inventory means everything of a moral nature. It does not say good or bad. It just says moral. Unfortunately this inventory ends up in two categories. Good and bad, but the step only requires that we do the search or inventory. It does not say that we are supposed to do anything with it. Just make your list and be honest. Also notice what it does not say, it does not say to judge anything you are writing down. Be neutral.

Example:

I stole money from my family to buy drugs.

I felt relieved when I decided to be honest.

Both of these statements are of a moral nature. One positive, one negative, but both are healing. Your list may contain a lot of “negative.” That is the result of our addiction but remember to include the positives as well.

What this step does for us is to bring forth to the conscious mind all the information that we have tried to hide with a haze of chemicals. And don’t kid yourself, this is a painful process. You are facing all that has kept you running, and all that will free you.

Sit down and write your searching and fearless, moral inventory.
