Our Bloodstream and what it means to “recovery”

June 19th, 2008 by brad whisnant

What will happen if there is a 3% reduction or impaired blood flow to a particular area in your body?

You will start to have a decrease in your organ function.  Blood flow is the basis if for life as are the organs that are nourished and sustained by the flow of your blood.  All of our bodies healing chemicals are in our blood.  The anti-inflammatories, natural pain killer, oxygen, nutrients; anything your body can secrete to heal itself gets to your cells via the “river of blood”.   Not only does our blood stream nourish us, it also carries away all the ”undesirables” in our bodies, or waste materials.  This is extremelyimportant in the case of somebody in “recovery or detox”.  Before we can heal, we need to rid ourselves of all the toxic chemicals.  It is our blood stream that does this.  Instead of taking more chemicals, which typically ”suppress” our symptoms we can naturally excite our blood stream to heal ourselves.  One such natural way is acupuncture.

Though acupuncture has traditionally been cloaked in mystic and magic there is an easy western scientific explanation.  A brief synopsis of what happens to our bodies is as follows:  When a needle is inserted at a specific nerve nodal point it sends a signal up the spine to the brain.  The mid brain interprets this signal and vasodilates the corresponding vessels.  These vessels in turn nourish, heal, and clean the diseased area.  The needle tells the brain to “push” more blood to the target area.  This area could be a sprained ankle or a weak functioning heart.  As “new and more” blood is “pushed” the area begins to become nourished and healed.  This is happening because of the increased blood with the correct nutrients in the blood (such as the correct hormones, enkephalin, endorphins, oxygen, etc)

Typically with chronic pain or lowered organ function we should be “nourishing” the area, not “suppressing” it as is a typical route in western medicine.  If we nourish our body in the same manner we nourish a small plant in the garden, by giving it water, nutrients, and care, the road to recovery can be much quicker and easier.
