Suicide in the U.S.: Statistics and Prevention

Suicide and suicidal behavior are not normal responses to stress; many people have these risk factors, but are not suicidal. Research also shows that the risk for suicide is associated with changes in brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, including serotonin. Decreased levels of serotonin have been found in people with depression, impulsive disorders, and a history of suicide attempts, and in the brains of suicide victims.

Fathers’ Alcohol Use and Substance Use Among Adolescents

In Brief

Almost one in twelve (7.9 percent) fathers living with adolescents aged 12 to 17 had an alcohol use disorder, while 68.1 percent used alcohol in the past year but did not have an alcohol use disorder; 24.1 percent did not use alcohol in the past year

Cognitive Behavior Therapy For Addiction

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a promising treatment for a wide range of addictions. While the therapy itself is not a treatment for any addiction, it can be used as part of a larger therapeutic program, and will allow someone to recover more quickly. Many people do not understand the basics of Cognitive Behavior Therapy. The main theory of the therapy is that a person has his or her feelings and behaviors based on their thoughts, and not by anything that they do. While many people may think this is crazy, there is some logical basis to it.

The Power of Meditating

Online Recovery Support Radio: Episode 9 hosted by a dear friend. I decided to add a little about my own reflections on meditation. When I first learned about meditation, I thought it was silly. I did not think I could get much out of it. Not only that, but I knew I could not sit still for any period of time because I found my mind just wonders. Mike had told me to find a special quiet place, and to go there when things get tough, or if you needed to find an answer to a question and needed some guidance.

NIDA InfoFacts: High School and Youth Trends

Since 1975, the Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey has been administered annually to study the extent of and beliefs about drug use among 12th-graders. The survey was expanded in 1991 to include 8th- and 10th-graders. It is funded by NIDA and is conducted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. The goal of the survey is to collect data on daily, past-month, past-year, and lifetime1 drug use among students in these grade levels. The 34th annual study was conducted during 2008.2
