Adolescent Treatment Today Newsletter May/June 2008

Thursday, May 29th, 2008
I’ll begin with a disclosure…I work with adolescents in residential treatment. That means these teens have multiple problems stacked up in a kind of multi-layered, multi-dimensional, and multi-axial diagnostic “cake.” This suggests the adolescents have had long-standing behavioral, emotional and mental troubles that they have not been able to deal with successfully enough to cope and carry out life in a generally healthful way. It may also suggest that they may not have been able to utilize their past placements or treatment centers enough so that they could stay out of a more restrictive treatment environment. The combination of the two—unresolved problems and less effective past placement or treatment results—means that these kids are “stuck” in their issues. They are stuck in their behaviors that are unproductive, but thereby they are also wedged in their anger, hurt, confusion, stubbornness, and other kinds of traumatizing past or self-traumatizing present life experiences. How do you help adolescents who are “stuck”? First, name the stuck place:

We are looking for people to participate in a study sponsored by the NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH.

The study will create a DNA collection from over 2,000 people to permit scientists to search for OCD-related genes. Indentifying genes that contribute to OCD may lead to the development of better treatments for OCD. (more…)

When I tell you I’m an addict…

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

My good friend Mark L., a stand up recovery comedian, talks a lot about how we think,…”first thought wrong”. He makes a clear distinction of a normal person’s thinking , and the rest of us. It is not that normal people are better, it just means “most”. Most people don’t think like us that are recovering from addiction. How I identify with others a lot of times, is how I have similar thoughts of life. What follows is a great example of how we think. Can anyone identify?

Writers Wanted

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Online Recovery Support is looking for writers interested in having their material published on our site. The material needs to pertain specifically to recovery but can be from any perspective. The articles will be posted on the front page of Online Recovery Support or in one of the categories, and full credit will be given to the author if they wish. It is a great opportunity for therapists to promote their work, talk about what they are doing in their practice, or share new research they think may be helpful to the recovering community. We would love to hear from NAMI members and recovering individuals who have a story to tell. If interested, please contact us at etohtx@aol.com

In Loving Memory

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

This is where you can share the lives of friends and loved ones who have passed. http://www.my.calendars.net/loving_memory

Let us not Forget!!!

I know that there are many folks who keep their individual memories of children, parents, family, friends, business associates, hero’s and idols who have passed from this earth. Each has a story of how that person affected and inspired their life. I personally have known many in my years who have passed from active  addiction. But I have also known many who have passed on clean. This memorial here is not specific to those who may or may not have been connected to recovery. Many have passed because of someone else’s poor choices in life. It is important to me to leave this open to anyone who has a story to tell. I want to honor their stories of life and death with my own commitment to staying clean. I hope you share with us someone who was special in your life. If you have a memorial page you want to share, please give me the URL and I will place it in the calendar. Thank You…..

Suicide in the U.S.

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Suicide is a major, preventable public health problem. In 2004, it was the eleventh leading cause of death in the U.S., accounting for 32,439 deaths.1 The overall rate was 10.9 suicide deaths per 100,000 people.1 An estimated eight to 25 attempted suicides occur per every suicide death.2

Suicidal behavior is complex. Some risk factors vary with age, gender, or ethnic group and may occur in combination or change over time.
If you are in a crisis and need help right away:

Call this toll-free number, available 24 hours a day, every day: 1-800-273-TALK (8255). You will reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a service available to anyone. You may call for yourself or for someone you care about. All calls are confidential. (more…)

Dependence on alcohol and drugs is our most serious national public health problem. It is prevalent among rich and poor, in all regions of the country, and all ethnic and social groups.

Millions of Americans misuse or are dependent on alcohol or drugs. Most of them have families who suffer the consequences, often serious, of living with this illness. If there is alcohol or drug dependence in your family, remember you are not alone.

Recovery in the Beginning - What Happens in the Family?

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Written by Judy MacKenzie

The journey that leads to the road of Alcoholic and Addiction Recovery is often filled with detours and side trips for the person taking that journey. Along the road families and loved ones are often discarded and left behind. For those of us who have chosen to continue on the trip it is often a very bumpy and uncomfortable ride. A ride that changes life as you have known it - a ride that can take you to amazing places if you allow yourself to go. (more…)
